If you are Flying in and out the same day, you must factor in adequate time to get back across the border into the United States. Always allow a minimum of 8-10 hours before your land and take off if you are planning a one day visit. A reasonable schedule would be a flight arriving in San Diego at 9 A.M. and a return flight at 7:30 that evening.

Lindbergh Field is San Diego’s International airport (code SAN) near downtown. (http://www.san.org/splash.asp) Do not fly into Tijuana airport unless you are flying from within Mexico. The distance from the San Diego National Airport to the clinic is about 20 miles.
AMTRAK goes to the train station (Santa Fe) in downtown San Diego, which is also a Trolley stop. Change here for the Blue LineTrolley to San Ysidro where it terminates right at the border. The Greyhound Bus depot is in San Ysidro; you can simply walk across the border and catch a cab for the final 2 miles. The clinic can send you more information on those options if you like.
Most rental car agencies do not want their vehicles to cross the border. But many private car insurance policies cover you within so many miles across the border (usually 25 or 50 miles), and of course, there are many “day insurance” sales as you drive in. Check with your insurance agent lest you waste money on additional coverage when not needed. You can always park in one of the many lots at the border, walk across and catch a cab.
OPTIONS FOR GETTING TO OUR CLINIC FROM SAN DIEGO:
(1) A cab from the San Diego Airport to the border (18 miles) is around $50. A bus to the train/trolley station and taking the trolley to the border is $2.25. Either way, walk across the border and catch a YELLOW cab to the clinic for $3-$5. (Cab driver instructions in English and Spanish are in a separate document)
(2) We can arrange to have a van pick you up. Cost is $25 one-way during normal 8-5 hours, and $50 other hours and weekends. We can make the reservations for you after being provided with your full flight information. Payment is made with our receptionist.
(3) The San Diego public transportation system. A separate document on the San Diego Trolley shows photos, route map and rates. For anyone arriving in San Diego mid to late afternoon and planning to stay in Tijuana, the trolley is the BEST way to get to the border! The freeway becomes a parking lot at times and getting into Mexico can be daunting with Mexicans returning from a day of work, party-goers rushing for their first cerveza, tourists heading for an evening of fine dining and drivers who are lost and did not take the “Last USA Exit”, but the traffic moves quickly. Mexican authorities don’t stop every car like on the return to the USA.
(4) Border parking abounds. Do not park in the Mexicoach lot as their bus takes you downtown in the Revolution area, and you need to go to Zona Rio. We suggest the Duty Free lot that is reached by taking the “Last USA Exit” and staying on the frontage road until you come to a traffic light – continue on through that light, and the parking lot is off to the right. This lot abuts the International fence – very large. If you are adventurous, you can drive around and find all-day parking as low as $4.00 if you want to walk a few blocks. The clinic can send you email info on parking lots if you like – just ask. Also follow the link below to USA parking options.
In the winder San Diego may be fogged in until mid-morning causing flight delays.
