Facial Lipoatrophy

Are you HIV+ and feel as though you are being “marked” by the face of the disease? Is your lipoatrophy impacting your life and affecting your self-esteem, career choices, and social life?

Lipoatrophy – General Information

Lipoatrophy refers to an abnormal loss of body fat, most notably the fat immediately beneath the skin (subcutaneous fat). It is a subset of the lipodystrophy disorder that often accompanies the HIV disease. The exact cause of lipodystrophy is unknown though it is believed to be multifactorial–a combination of both the HIV disease and the medications used to control it.

Lipoatrophy – Sunken and Hollow Cheeks

One of the most prominent features of facial lipoatrophy is sunken cheeks–cheeks that have lost their fullness and appear hollow. Facial lipoatrophy can also cause diminished fat around the nose and mouth resulting in the formation of deep nasolabial folds. The fat that fills out the temples as well as around the eyes can also be affected by lipoatrophy. When fat in these parts of the face becomes diminished, it can result in a skeletal appearance. In severe cases the outlines of the facial muscles can be seen and felt through the skin.
